TableBerg — Native Gutenberg Table Builder
A versioned migration from a custom table editor to native Gutenberg blocks.
The Client
TableBerg helps WordPress publishers build responsive tables inside the block editor, including comparison, pricing, and product tables, without falling back to shortcodes or a separate editing interface.
The Brief
The original custom table model limited native block-editor behaviour. Moving existing user content to a block-native architecture had to preserve published markup and remain safe across multiple historical data versions.
What Shipped
Engineered the move to native Gutenberg cells, rows, and columns with versioned PHP migrators. Added representative fixtures and golden-render verification so historical tables could be compared before and after migration rather than relying on manual spot checks.
How it was built
The current editor is composed from native blocks, while server-side migrators detect stored data versions and transform legacy table structures in controlled steps. Free and Pro functionality remain separated without changing the core document model.
The key challenge was not creating a new table UI; it was guaranteeing that tables created under older versions would continue to render correctly as the internal model changed.
